Picture Reinforcer Menu!

One of the best techniques to use when implementing a reinforcement system is a picture reinforcement menu. This allows the child to choose what reinforcer they want to work for. It gives them a visual representati...ve of each item that is available to work for, plus it allows them the freedom to make a choice; increasing the likelihood that the item is truly reinforcing at that time. By giving the child the choice, it increases the child's activity participation and gives them some control in the reinforcement process. Using such a menu also minimizes the chances that the child will be get "tired" of the reinforcer, since there are many to choose from, and they can be varied frequently. Also, if the pictures on the menu are velcro, and can be removed from the menu, then the child can take the picture of the item with them to remind them what they are working for. Some children need to have the picture in sight to remember what they are working for. The parent and child can frequently add and/or delete items from the menu, keeping it filled with motivating items. Overall, the use of a reinforcer menu, is fun and motivating.
